The aim of this page is to complement The Unofficial Lassie Website's Lassie TV Series Novels webpage, which provides further details about the Whitman novels and Big Little Books. Below I have described the differences between Lassie books printed by the same and different publishers. More books of interest are listed on the Photographs page.

You can find books in antique shops, opportunity/charity shops, secondhand bookshops, garage sales, swap meets (in Australia where people have stalls and sell their unwanted stuff like car parts, crockery, books, bric-a-brac, etc., often run by vintage car clubs. I found several of my books at swap meets), markets, library sales, or in the library to borrow. There are also many places on the Internet to find books. I own all the books pictured here, except the library books: Lassie Come-Home [Cassell (1978), Henry Holt (2003) and German edition] and Lassie Come-Home retold by Rosemary Wells.

I love collecting and reading books. If you're interested in reading animal and TV/movie books, or other topics, check out my email group.

Lassie Come-Home

The classic book Lassie Come-Home by Eric Knight has been published many times since its original publication, and is a much-loved favourite the world over. I first read this book from the public library, a hardcover with illustrations by Marguerite Kirmse and the easily recognised cover of a sable rough collie's face with blue sky in the background. It is my favourite edition of this story.

Challenge to Lassie

Challenge to Lassie cover Books can turn up when you least expect it. This was one of them. On holiday with my family when I was a teenager, I walked into an antique shop and there, in plain sight on a table lay a lone book, complete with dust jacket. Gasp! "Lassie!" I exclaimed under my breath. I picked it up... it's in pretty good condition, but no price tag... "How much is this?" I asked. "Oh... five dollars" [Australian]. Wow! I took it there and then.

The Magic of Lassie

The novelisation of the Jack Wrather film The Magic of Lassie has no photographs inside as in the three books listed directly above. Instead, there are four photographs on the back cover and one on the front, all in colour. There are no internal illustrations.

The Magic of Lassie, Special Book Club Edition cover Summary: Intelligent, loyal, brave Lassie, the champion collie, was young Chris Mitchell's pride and joy. But then Jamison, a ruthless dog breeder, claimed Lassie belonged to him. And he had the papers to prove it! Carted off to a kennel hundreds of miles away, Lassie longed for her family. Then suddenly, she had a chance to escape. Ahead lay a long cross-country trek through treacherous, rocky terrain. Could she make it? Hunted like an outlaw, risking starvation and death, Lassie began the incredible journey home.

Lassie: Best Friends are Forever

Lassie: Best Friends are Forever - original Australian release cover I entered a colouring competition run by The Australian Women's Weekly magazine; it was to colour in a picture of Lassie's head. I was thrilled to be one of the winners to see a special family preview of Lassie: Best Friends are Forever, and received a token to Admit Four to see the film in the cinema. Afterwards we went into Myers and I saw a whole stack of books based on the movie - I was in seventh heaven... cloud nine... of course I couldn't leave without one! This Puffin Book has the same picture seen on the poster and the Admit Four token, with a gorgeous closeup of Lassie's head, and below, Matt and Lassie on a hill with the vista of green paddocks behind them. The "poster cover" book edition of Lassie: Best Friends are Forever is hard to find. I have seen it a few times on Ebay Australia.

Lassie: Best Friends are Forever
by Sheila Black; based on the screenplay by Matthew Jacobs and Gary Ross and Elizabeth Anderson; based on the character of Lassie created by Eric Knight.
145 p. Ringwood, VIC, Australia : Puffin, 1994.
Printed in Australia by Australian Print Group.
ISBN 0140368027 (paperback).

Lassie by Sheila Black - USA release cover The more commonly seen cover of this book shows a photograph of Matt hugging Lassie.

Lassie
by Sheila Black; based on the screenplay by Matthew Jacobs and Gary Ross and Elizabeth Anderson; based on the character of Lassie created by Eric Knight.
145 p. New York : Troll Associates, 1994.
ISBN 0140368027 (paperback).

I have seen this in Australia (in a Scholastic Book Club catalogue), on Ebay and book seller sites (eg. BookFinder.com). This Troll Associates book is titled simply Lassie - it does not include Best Friends are Forever, the rest of the movie title. Both books were published by the Penguin Group.

The black-and-white photographs in the Troll Associates book are darker than in the Australian "poster cover" book edition. The benefits of lighter ink enable more details to be seen in some scenes; in other cases, vice versa. Another difference between both is some photographs in the Troll Associates book span the whole page, whereas the Australian book's photos have a white border around all photos, thus cutting parts of the scene in a few. It is worth having the Australian book just to see more details in the photographs, that the darker pictures from Troll Associates cut out - and also the Troll Associates book is a must for the extra scenery in some photos!

Lassie's Brave Adventure

Lassie's Brave Adventure cover Lassie's Brave Adventure was the first Lassie book I ever owned - and I never knew what it was called until many years later. The one I used to own never, in my memory, had a cover. At some point the book I spent time and again looking at, got lost. With the Internet at my fingertips a few years ago, searching for Lassie books to collect, I could not recall this book's title. I remembered the basic storyline, that involved a steam train and a black horse. It was through Ebay that I found this book again, with a cover, and it remains one of my favourite Tell-A-Tale stories.

Summary: It was a hot, dry day and the Miller family were relaxing on the porch. Jeff refused to go with Lassie and Star, the neighbour's black colt, to watch the daily freight steam train cross the bridge. Lassie went on her own. But where was Star? And where was that smoke coming from?

Lassie and the Cub Scout

Lassie and the Cub Scout coverThe illustrations of Lassie in this book are beautiful and detailed.

Summary: Danny Glover was friends with forest ranger Corey Stuart and Lassie. Corey arrived with Lassie at Danny's cub scout meeting where the boys showed him their current month's project of birdhouses and feeders. Corey explained to them how hard it was for birds who came north too early to find food. Danny put his feeder in the forest the next day, with Lassie watching. Danny fell and hit his head. Lassie must get help! Could she make Corey Stuart's colleague, Dick Wheeler, understand?

Lassie and the Deer Mystery

There are two published versions of Lassie and the Deer Mystery. The Whitman BIG Tell-A-Tale has twenty-three internal illustrations, including those over double pages. It has more illustrations and a little more text than the BIG Television Book. Both books are highly collectible and the BIG Television Book has bigger pictures. This story is an excellent example of the conservation theme in the Lassie forest ranger episodes. The illustrations of Lassie appear to be based on Baby - at least one is based on a photograph.

Lassie: The Mystery of Bristlecone Pine

Lassie The Wonderdog slipcase Three books by Steve Frazee, published by Target, have been sold in a slipcase boxed set titled Lassie The Wonderdog. The three books in this boxset are Lassie: Trouble at Panter's Lake, Lassie: Lost in the Snow and Lassie: The Mystery at Bristlecone Pine.

The illustration on the Target published version of Lassie: The Mystery of Bristlecone Pine looks more like a Shetland sheepdog than a rough collie, and doesn't even look like Lassie from the TV series! Both Target versions of Lassie: The Mystery of Bristlecone Pine and Lassie: Trouble at Panter's Lake were published in 1982. It appears they couldn't get the same illustrator who did the Target books in 1978. A shame, the 1978 Target illustrations of Lassie were nicely done.

Lassie and the Big Clean-Up Day

Lassie and the Big Clean-Up Day, Australian edition cover Bob Schaar's illustrations are among my favourites of Lassie.

Summary: Lassie and forest ranger Scott Turner were visiting the Smoky Mountains National Forest. Exploring the forest one day, Lassie discovered a black bear cub with a tin can stuck over its head. Lassie led him to the ranger station, where Scott worked with Glen Jones, another forest ranger. The following day Lassie spotted a baby deer that hurt itself on a broken glass bottle. Again she sought Scott's help. Lassie was determined to do something about the litter lying around the forest before she and Scott Turner left, so that no more animals would be harmed!

Lassie and the Secret Friend

Lassie and the Secret Friend cover Bob Erickson is in this story (his surname is spelt as Ericson in the book). This is a big picture book with gorgeous illustrations. Summary: Lassie and forest ranger Bob Erickson were in the Blue River National Forest. It was a perfect afternoon for Lassie to explore. Lassie found an eagle who was hurt and too weak to fly.
